Cultural Observations

Saturday 11/28/2009

One of the other nice features of the Traders Hotel is that breakfast is included.  For most of our stay, we frequented Gobo Chit Chat Upstairs.  The selection was similar to Gobo Chit Chat proper but without the craziness and chaos.  The hotel served a selection of local and world cuisine.  On our last day in KL, we went down to breakfast before Gobo Chit Chat Upstairs had opened so we were forced to visit the larger, more crowded breakfast venue.  Because it was an Islamic holiday, there seemed to be lots of Muslim visitors to KL.  It was interesting to see some of the contrasts and religious interpretations throughout KL.  We saw many women wearing very colorful dresses and headscarves.  We saw some people wearing a headscarf with their work uniform or with more westernized clothing.  We even saw some women in all black wearing a full burka -- we could only see a slit for their eyes.  At breakfast, there was a table of women in burkas sitting close to us.  I got to thinking how challenging it must be to eat in this required clothing.  I noticed one woman carefully peel back the fabric around her mouth, eat a spoonful of food and then close it back up.  She was very careful not to expose her face to the crowd.  It was all very different from what we grow up taking for granted.
